Project 21: Day 4

Another long awaited installment of Project 21. This time it features 19 year Kaya Marley, a dancer, student, intern, fashionista, free spirit and granddaughter of the legendary Bob Marley. I can't really remember how it is that we came across each other exactly but I do know that Kaya is one of thee sweetest and coolest girls you could ever meet. During our phone conversation she was so pleasant and full of life. I got the impression that there is an unmatched passion in everything she does and she is a hard working young lady. I mean, what else do you expect? Allow me to introduce, Kaya Marley.

Krav: Musings of Krav is a website based off of inspiration. So my first question is, what inspires you?
Kaya: What inspires me is anything street, graffiti and anything that is art period or "weird"  inspires me and my style besides my aunt and grandmother.

 Who is your favorite artist?
Can it be plural? Keith Haring and Basquiat
 What is your dream career?
Thats a good one, I've been talking about this over the week. It would be to be a Dancer/Fashion stylist.

What are some steps have you taken to get there?
As far as fashion,  I'm interning for Billionaire Boys Club (Pharrells clothing line) and it's teaching me a lot. I've met many wonderful people during that journey. With dancing, I'm taking classes and training again so I could be on So You Think You Can Dance.
What is your experience like interning at BBC?
The experience is pretty wonderful. Some tasks are difficult but I get through it.  I've been depressed because they want me to work there yet  they aren't hiring, so waiting on that has been rocky for me.

So you waiting, how do you think that it is teaching you a lesson?
I think it teaches me something, you never know who's watching or holding you back. It's preparing me for my near future.

Describe your personal style and how it has evolved over the years.
I usually say I don't have a style because I can go with anything. Someone pointed out that my style is unknown because they didn't know what to call it. In junior high school it was very retro and now its just everything. Retro, chic, girly, edge, I can just to it all.

What's your favorite style of dress?
I like to be edgy a lot, so what I usually wear is a lot of black with color. Creepers, Doc Martens and I keep a sunflower with me.

Who are people that inspire your style?
My aunt Karen on my dad's side and my grandmother on my moms side. As far as designers, definetly Marc Jacobs and Mark Mcnairy.
Of course your one of Bob Marleys grandchildren, do you feel obligated to carry his legacy and represent him?
I do, the family is carrying his legacy but within the family it doesnt mean what he stood for. I have an obligation to follow his foot steps and be a revolutionary.

Do a lot of people try to be your friend because of your last name?
Pretty much, sometimes I test them but I grow to develop great friendships when they are honest.

When your not dancing or interning at BBC, what are doing?
Chilling at home, watching my flat screen or in the city exploring things that no one thinks of. I love NY, it's the city that never sleeps.
